What is a School Social Worker?
School social workers are trained professionals who work mainly with special education children and students from birth to age 26. School social workers teach social, behavioral, and emotional skills needed for school success, and they collaborate with school psychologists to evaluate children for emotional impairment or autism spectrum disorders. They also facilitate prevention and intervention services in schools. In addition, school social workers provide professional development to local school district staff and coordinate services with outside agencies such as community mental health, the court system, and the Department of Health and Human Services. They are required to have a master's degree with courses in school social work, and have approval to practice from the State of Michigan.
